Assuming you have one (physically or energetically), when was the last time you paid attention to your womb?

I know for me it took until I was 27 to really connect with mine. But as soon as I REALLY got in touch with my womb I was blown away.

I have never wanted children and proudly declared it from when I was 11 years old. Despite growing up in a deeply conservative culture, I knew that the role of homemaker/wife/mother just wasn’t for me. Even though it was all I knew (minus the badass female lawyers on Law and Order), I stuck to my guns about living a childless life.

I grew up and became the childless woman I always wanted to be. However, like most people with wombs in our society, I didn’t notice her much. I only paid attention during particularly painful cramping sessions or uncomfortable conversations with an opinionated stranger about my reproductive choices.

Then I went to a Tantric retreat. I finally spent some quality time with my womb using an advanced version of the technique I describe below. I’ve never been the same.

She revealed herself to be incredibly rebellious and refused to be tamed by anyone, even me. I understood that she is the part of me that refuses to have children. She was the part that gave me the strength to stand up to the immense cultural pressure I was raised under. She is the cauldron of passion that fuels my dreams today.

That glorious baby box inside of you, literally or energetically, is just as magical. Despite the periodic cramping and messiness wombs are one of the most beautiful parts of your body.

Wombs can birth far more than just babies (though that’s definitely a crazy superpower too). In the classic 7-chakra system that most Westerners are familiar with, the area where the womb is located also the approximate place of an important chakra: svadhisthana (aka the sacral chakra.)

Svadhisthana is the chakra of creativity and abundance in the broadest sense of the word. When you get familiar with the energy of your womb/svadhisthana and do your best to support her, amazing things can birth out of you.

Art, books, ideas, organizations, political movements, businesses, whatever you can dream of is within your womb. All of these and more can be brought into this world just like a human child can. And this is just the start.

When you reach menopause your womb becomes even more magical. In a passage from the first chapter of The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, menopause is described as a “second spring” in a woman’s life.

All of the energy once spent on preparing for and creating physical humans is now freed up for other things. Leadership in your community, pursuing that dream you put on hold, or deepening your craft is all possible during and after this stage of life.

In addition to these powerful gifts your womb gives you personally, she is also a source of deep nurturance and connection to your biological ancestors. The energetic past of your ancestors, both the wisdom and the trauma, is transmitted and held in the energy of your womb.

Working with her, you can heal to these cumulative traumas. This clears any ancestral blockages that you may have inherited and prevents them from affecting any children that you may have in the future.

You can also use her as a conduit to tap into their cumulative wisdom. Not only does this help you navigate the difficulties of life, but it’s also a beautiful gift to those who came before you. Everyone likes to be listened to, even those that aren’t around physically anymore.

Even physical destruction can’t stop the power of your womb. If your physical uterus has been removed the energetic signature will always be there. Come old age, menopause, hysterectomy, cancer, or a freak accident NOTHING can take her from you.

If you are a person born without a womb but you feel deep down that you should, you probably have an energetic womb inside you. It has all the same gifts and magic that a physical womb would have.

This may happen because of a past-life spent as a person with a womb, but ultimately it doesn’t matter where the feeling comes from. What matters is embracing your experiences as truth and allowing yourself the gifts that your womb can bring you: physical or not.

If you’re ready to establish an embodied, experiential connection with your womb, try the Womb Breathing exercise below.

Note: You should NOT do this exercise if you have a history of epilepsy or breathing disorders.

  1. In a safe, private place get comfortable and settle into your body. Notice how your body feels inside and out from the crown of your head to the tip of your toes. Relax deeply.

  2. When you’re ready, start breathing with deep, oceanic breaths in and out of your mouth. Keep this breath connected, with no pause between the inhale and the exhale.

  3. As you continue to breathe, mentally throw anatomy out the window and imagine your goes all the way into your womb or the energy of your womb. Let your womb breathe your breath.

  4. Keep breathing this way and rest your attention on your womb or the energy of your womb. Gently notice any thoughts, emotions, or subtle physical sensations that crop up. This may be challenging at first but remember, even numbness is a sensation worthy of noting. Pro Tip: If you feel the urge to move, shake, or say things or make sounds go for it.

  5. If at any point it becomes overwhelming or scary pause, soften the breath, and notice your surroundings. Once you feel settled and calm return to the deep connected breath.

  6. After 10-15 minutes of breathing this way, let your breath return to normal, in and out of your nose. Rest for 1-5 minutes and feel gratitude to this incredible part of your body.

Embracing your womb is embracing the feminine at its core. Our patriarchal society has taught us that she’s nothing more than a potentially cancerous liability that squirts blood regularly and creates babies occasionally.

By changing your mindset toward her, by choosing to see her magic and power, you are taking a stand for those with wombs everywhere. If you can find the sacred of your womb the patriarchy, and all the suffering that stems from it, don’t stand a chance.
